Pirates of the Caribbean is now on its third movie and still managing to pull off all the amazing stunts and keep the viewer pinned to their seat with such a gripping storyline. The three Pirates of the Caribbean movies have been very successful and very appealing to the younger generation.

The most important part of these films are the characters and more importantly the job the actors do of portraying them. One of the most popular characters in all three of the movies is Captain Jack Sparrow.

Many girls and women around the world will like him because of his looks whilst many boys and men may find him as a funny and clumsy character, in this article I am going to try my best to explain some of the factors that make the character of Captain Jack Sparrow so popular. This will be interesting because there are many different aspects of his character that could bring his popularity, his looks, his persona or his general clumsiness. Jack Sparrow is a pirate and is Captain of The Black Pearl, you would think that being a Captain would mean you are of high rank and a knowledgeable person. High in rank yes. Knowledgeable? Definitely not the brightest of Captains. Jack Sparrow has the looks but always follows his heart in the three movies. In the first movie he is portrayed as a thief and a treasure hunter who only cares about his wealth but towards the end we learn that he is compassionate and cares for his friends.

Though a thief would most likely be hated by its viewers, surprisingly the viewers love Jack Sparrow, mainly because his humorous jokes and misunderstandings as well as his clumsiness. His role in the first film showed him develop as a character and showed us that there is more behind his looks, however that was only a glimpse of his character, though he may have seemed like a changed man by the end of the first movie, his old traits begin to show up in the second. Though his traits may show up we soon find that there is more to Jacks character than we knew in the first movie.

In the second movie Jack Sparrow’s character begins as in the first but with a slight difference, we see his thievery as normal because we have grown to like him as a character. We accept his differences as a pirate and we do not question his actions, however in this film we see his character change a lot. He run’s scared from death and we learn throughout the film that he is afraid of death, but at the end of the film he plunges beneath the ocean as a Captain going down with his ship, we see him as brave, courageous and a hero, this makes us like him more and more because we know that he can change.

Humour aside, we have learnt from the second movie that Jack Sparrow is indeed a courageous man and can face his fears. After seeing this the viewers have no doubt that he is capable of anything, he can overcome his fears, he can get what he wants and he stays true as a friend.

Since the third film has only recently been released I don’t want to give away any spoilers so I will not be going into detail on the way Jack acts in the third movie.

Overall out of all the films I believe that the one thing that made Captain Jack Sparrow so popular was the way his character was portrayed, he could be liked by anyone. Whether it was for Johnny Depp’s stunning good looks or whether his clumsiness and stupidity appealed to those of a younger generation, Johnny Depp played the character of Captain Jack Sparrow so well that he managed to make him the most popular character in all the films so far.

His popularity just speaks for itself, there are plenty of websites made by fans that love his character, there is a huge supply of merchandise available and there are many articles around the internet such as this one that dive into the certain aspects of his character and many other topics based on the character of Jack Sparrow. We began with a thief who then showed remorse and showed how he could be a good person, he seems fearless but as the movies progress we learn that even Jack Sparrow is afraid of things, but then he stands up and faces his fears. He is the most popular and developed character in all of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies.
